Insight on the Word

The Hebrews understood the terrible effect of floods upon the world. For torrential rains are frequent in the East and sometimes carry flocks, crops, and even houses away with floods. But more than what some would call natural floods, there was the great flood of Noah’s day that brought destruction to the whole earth “behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die” (Genesis 6:17).

Proverbs speaks of the loss of crops by a sweeping rain: “A poor man that oppresseth the poor is like a sweeping rain which leaveth no food” (Proverbs 28:3). Eastern monsoons, floods, and winds do great damage to houses and completely destroy some. Jesus said: “the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it” (Matthew 7:27).

So where the people depended so much on the land and the crops they raised for daily existence, there was a fear of heavy rains and floods. God however through the prophet Isaiah wanted to reassure the people that He would always be with them even in times of flood. In fact God had given his promise, confirmed by the rainbow, that He would never destroy the earth again by water (Genesis 9:11-12). So true is God to His word, that the next time the world is destroyed it will not be water but by fire (2 Peter 3:10).

God is faithful to preserve and keep His people through any kind of difficulties that come upon us: tornados, winds, drought, cold, heat, and yes even floods. We should have no fear of these earthly disasters. For God has said: “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee.”

Speak the Word — God is always with me, even in times of floods! (Isaiah 43:2)
